Biography

Hello! My name is Melissa Krumm. Since I spend all year getting to know your child, it is only fair that I let you get to know me a little bit. After graduating from Urbandale High School, I went to Iowa State University and received my Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Music Education. While at Iowa State, I began working for ChildServe, providing respite care for children with all ranges of disabilities. It was through this job that I found my passion for students with special needs. After graduation I spent three years designing and implementing in-home education programs for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. It only made sense to add special education to my teaching license, so I obtained my Master’s Degree in Special Education: Intellectual Disabilities in 2013. I joined the McKinley staff in 2010 and have loved being a part of this school community.

Outside of school I love to spend time with my family. My husband, son, daughter and I love to listen to and create our own music. We also love to read and you can usually find at least one of us with our nose in a book. We are fortunate that our parents and siblings live close by and we get to spend lots of time with them. I am very lucky to have such a great family both at home and in my classroom.

Biography

Hello! I am Laura Myers, a special education teacher working with students who have intellectual disabilities. I started with the Des Moines School District in December of 1997 teaching at a middle school for five and a half years. I was fortunate to be able to spend some years home with my children when they were younger. When my youngest started Kindergarten, I returned to the district and came right here to McKinley Elementary. This is my fifth year at McKinley, and I truly enjoy it here. The students and their families make the difference for me, and I have great ones!

I went to college at the University of Northern Iowa and graduated with a major in Special Education: Moderate / Severe / Profound Mental Disabilities. Eventually, I went back to school and enrolled at Graceland University. I now have a Master's Degree in Differentiated Instruction.

I have three wonderful children who keep me very busy away from work. They are 15, 13, and 9 years old - two boys and one girl!

Thank you for visiting our school's website. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Biography

Hi! I’m Joan Shultz, a special education resource teacher working with students in Kindergarten and 3rd grade. I love the opportunity to teach and encourage students to work hard, do their best, and find joy in learning.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from the University of Iowa. My teaching experiences include teaching in four school districts, teaching students from Kindergarten to 9th grade, and being a support teacher for special education teachers in middle schools and high schools.

In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes with my husband, and sailing with our son and daughter. Both of our kids graduated from Lincoln High School (Southside Pride) and are students at Iowa State University!

I am blessed to work with our McKinley students, wonderful parents, and our dedicated staff. Thank you!
