The 2016-17 school year starts my 17th year teaching and I am as excited as ever! I am from Arizona, but have fallen in love with Iowa seasons. I have a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and have a Reading Endorsement. I am married with two kids. I love to read, kayak and hang out with my family. This is my second year teaching at McKinley Elementary and I am thrilled to be back with such amazing staff, students and families.
My name is Crystal Holsapple and I love teaching Kindergarten here at Mckinley! I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in the winter of 2013 and have been with the Des Moines Public School District since I started substituting.
Kindergarten has always had a special place in my heart and it is such a fundamental year for children. We learn how to work with others, members in our community, the different seasons and how important the sun is. We learn how to identify letters to become better readers. We learn how to write those letters to create words to become better writers. We learn how to count and how to use our skills to solve addition and subtraction problems. There is so much to learn in kindergarten!
Family is a huge part of my life. I grew up in the Des Moines metro area and my family is all here. My own family consists of my husband, Greg, Delaney, our 1 year old, and our adorable cockapoo, Hazel! We love taking walks and traveling down to the family farm.
I love working with our families to build a strong bond between school and home. The first teacher our students have are their loved ones at home. Let’s have a successful year and continue to build a great team working together to make a strong and successful kindergartener!
Hello families! My name is Ami Kercheval and this is my 16th year of teaching and my 9th year at McKinley. I really enjoy working with all of the families and students at McKinley and am looking forward to another great year!
I am very excited for the 2016-2017 school year! Not only do I get to return to first grade after a short visit to 2nd grade, I also will be welcoming a new child into my family. I am married and we have an energetic 3 year old daughter who is beyond excited to become a big sister in January. We also have two dogs who keep us quite active. This will be my 14th year in education, with 6 of those years being here at McKinley. My bachelor’s degree is from St. Ambrose University in Davenport in Early Childhood education and my master’s degree is from Illinois State University in Special Education. My family and I enjoy spending time outdoors, playing, reading and fostering dogs for the Great Plains Pointer Rescue.
I am very excited to begin the 2017-2018 school year as a 4th grade teacher. It is hard to believe that I am beginning my 19th year as a teacher at McKinley. The first 15 years I was a Special Education teacher working with students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. I then taught 5th grade for two years. Last year, I taught 3rd grade.
I got my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, with endorsements in special education and early childhood, from Grand View College (now Grand View University) in 1999. In the spring of 2016, I completed my master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an Emphasis on Teaching Students who speak English as their second language from Buena Vista University.
I am married and have two children. My hobbies include reading, swimming, and spending time with my family.
Welcome to 2nd grade! My name is Ms. Allie Meyer. This is my fifth year of teaching, all as a McKinley Eagle! I graduated from Roosevelt High School and went on to get my degree in Elementary Education with a science endorsement from The University of Iowa. Go Hawks! I am currently working towards my M.S.E in Culturally Responsive Leadership and Instruction from Drake University. Go Bulldogs!
I enjoy spending free time outdoors by bike riding, camping, and gardening. Did you know that we have a garden at McKinley? If you would like more information regarding the garden or 2nd grade, please feel free to contact me via my school e-mail. I look forward to watching our students grow and learn how their successes contribute to our community!
Hello! I am Laura Myers, a special education teacher working with students who have intellectual disabilities. I started with the Des Moines School District in December of 1997 teaching at a middle school for five and a half years. I was fortunate to be able to spend some years home with my children when they were younger. When my youngest started Kindergarten, I returned to the district and came right here to McKinley Elementary. This is my fifth year at McKinley, and I truly enjoy it here. The students and their families make the difference for me, and I have great ones!
I went to college at the University of Northern Iowa and graduated with a major in Special Education: Moderate / Severe / Profound Mental Disabilities. Eventually, I went back to school and enrolled at Graceland University. I now have a Master’s Degree in Differentiated Instruction.
I have three wonderful children who keep me very busy away from work. They are 15, 13, and 9 years old – two boys and one girl!
Thank you for visiting our school’s website. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Hi! I’m Joan Shultz, a special education resource teacher working with students in third through fifth grade. I love the opportunity to teach and encourage students to work hard, do their best, and find joy in learning.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from the University of Iowa. My teaching experiences include teaching in four school districts, teaching students from Kindergarten to 9th grade, and being a support teacher for special education teachers in middle schools and high schools.
In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes with my husband, and sailing with our son and daughter. Both of our kids graduated from Lincoln High School (Southside Pride) and are students at Iowa State University!
I am blessed to work with our McKinley students, wonderful parents, and our dedicated staff. Thank you!
2014-15 will be my fourteenth year as a teacher and I have been lucky to spend every one of those years teaching preschool at McKinley Elementary. I’ve also done some teaching in summer school to second graders in the past. There is no doubt that teaching is my passion and I love all the reading, singing, dancing, acting, using technology and playing we do in our classroom. It is wonderful and amazing to see how much learning takes place during our nine months together!
My education path took me to Iowa State University where I earned my Bachelor’s degree and also became a dedicated Cyclones fan. I am married and the proud mother of an amazing seven year-old daughter. We enjoy reading books together, crafting, playing in the park and cooking together. Come in and introduce yourself next time you’re at McKinley!

Hello, and thank you for taking some time to learn more about me and what I have to offer as an educator. To tell you a little about me, I grew up in a very small town in North Central Iowa where the land is flat and the temperatures are frigid. I attended a community school that consisted of Pre-K through 12th grade.
My first degree came from the American Institute of Business right here in Des Moines, where I received an Associate of Arts Degree in Business Communications and Public Relations. I knew this wasn’t the career for me so I went back to college and received my Bachelor’s Degree in Education along with certification in K-8 Reading from Upper Iowa University. I also have certification to teach Driver’s Education (YIKES!!).
After a year and a half of research and writing papers, I earned my Master’s Degree in Differentiating Instruction from Graceland University. When I am not at school teaching, doing lesson plans or studying, I spend time with my family and friends. I have two sons, a two year-old, 14 year-old, and a daughter, 19 that attends Minnesota State University and is studying to be a teacher.
I look forward to establishing a relationship with you and your child, ensuring that all of their educational needs are being met and fulfilled. My goal is to make sure they feel comfortable and welcome in our classroom. I will provide a classroom where all of their needs can be met and they can focus on creating memories, making friends, and learning more than they ever thought possible.
Dreams are desirable and can be achieved!

Hi, my name is Mrs. Wright and this is my 10th year of teaching Kindergarten here at McKinley. I grew up in Manchester, Iowa. It is a small town in northeast Iowa. After graduating high school, I attended Iowa State University where I studied elementary education and Spanish. I had the opportunity to travel to Spain for a summer while I was in college to study Spanish and be immersed in the culture. It was an amazing experience and I was fortunate to be able to travel around while I was there as well.
After finishing college, I completed my student teaching in West Des Moines in elementary Spanish and in Des Moines teaching first grade. When I was hired at McKinley to teach Kindergarten, I was a little nervous to be honest. I had never thought about teaching Kindergarten before. I decided I needed to accept the job and give it a shot. Here I am 10 years later and am still loving it. I continue to learn every year and grow professionally as a teacher. I am currently studying for my master’s degree in education and will finish in February with a degree in Differentiated Instruction.
Other things that keep me busy besides teaching and studying are my family, friends, and hobbies. I am married and have a three year old daughter, Charlotte, who keeps me on my toes. Charlotte’s little brother is expected to make an arrival sometime in April. We are all very excited to meet him and know Charlotte will make a great big sister.
